Talk about the business and what they're trying what they're doing with Recovery Electric, and also see what his future, his legacy looks like in the area and where they're going. over 17 years ago. God willing, February 10th of next year I'll have 18 years. That's awesome. Clean it sober. with that, like whole things changed, whole life, you know what I mean? But where it really started to change for me is I finally

National Brotherhood of Electrical Workers working in California.

Local 40, which is the motion picture side of the IBEWs. So I built Super Mario World, did Fast and Fury. I I mean I've done countless rides at Universal Studios, stages, just a ton of stuff in that in that field and mo a lot of commercial electrical. So I had I have two boys. one thing that you'll probably hear about this podcast is like

I am family to a court. There is nothing more that means nothing means more to me than my family. Like if I had a ranking system, it's God, sobriety, and family. And some people might think that's weird that you put like your family above sobriety. For me, if I don't have any sobriety, I don't have my family. So that's the ranking system to me.

I was in the union for almost about 10 years, daily grind, you know what I mean? 60 hours a week, driving 65 miles one day. I grew up in a little tiny town in Cascade, California, where I grew up was a lot like I would I would say like Dewey right now. we had a drive.

15-20 minutes into town for our groceries. Literally the gas station that I worked at when I was in high school still had a hitching post. So people would like to ride their horses there and get a 12-pack of beer. So very like small towns, really, really small town people. Everyone knew everyone. If you were in trouble, everyone knew you were in trouble. If you were doing good, everyone knew you were doing good. And so we me and my wife got our first house. We had our boys. We had to move out of town because we couldn't afford nothing right there.

Community 65 miles one way to Universal Studios for work. It just got to be like a super drag.

So they were like starting to experiment in sports and like life. They were no longer like crawling around in diapers. And so I I've always been a yes man when I was employed by someone. It would be four o'clock on a Friday. Can you stay for another two hours? Yes, sir. And you know, hey, we can't get this done. Can you come tomorrow? And it's Saturday. And it didn't matter if my kid had a basketball game or we had plans of it. Like, yes, sir. Yes, sir, I'll be here. And so

I I just stopped liking that. I felt like I was missing out on my kids as they were getting older in what I call the fun years for a dad. a lot of the little stuff like mom time to me, like baby, you know, breastfeeding and walking and crawling. They're not now they're in tennis shoes, we're running around, we're playing sports, we're doing full, you know what I mean? Like now it's my time, and I wanted to be there. I came from

Who are still together like the best of all time. They provided everything they could within their wheelhouse to make me have the best life possible. I always had a Christmas, I always had a new pair of shoes for school, always had all the things you needed. I didn't like we didn't, we weren't rich by any stretch of the imagination, but we weren't poor. We always went on vacation. And so I wanted to be able to bring that life to my kids. And the union was a great job.

Can't can't explain enough. I love the union. I love everything they do. They train me to become the professional that I am. I just hated feeling like if I didn't say yes,

Yeah.

that there was a guy below me that was gonna say yes and that I would just lose my spot on the total pole. So COVID happened, everything happened, everything went chaotic. the housing market in California went

Absolutely insane. The plan we moved to this little mountain community called Fraser Park, and that was our first house. It was like all we could afford. And so the plan was to live there for a couple years and move back down to like where I grew up. And we got approved for a house. It was an eight hundred and eighty thousand dollar loan for a twelve hundred square foot, which is three bedroom, two bath on honey.

Supper that needed a kitchen remodel, needed a bathroom remodel. I mean, it was literally a turd with a a bow on it, you know what I mean? Just trying to trick you. And so we sat down with the bank and I didn't know how the bank like approved us on this thing. I had two car loans out with them, a twenty thousand dollar on my credit card from just raising kids and not having enough.

And I was like, how the heck am I gonna afford this? It was like $6,600 a month for this payment for this new house. And I we just we just couldn't do it. Like there was no way we could, we, me and my wife could do it. Like she had a full-time job, I had a full-time job. But the numbers weren't, the math wasn't mathing. I don't know how they mathed it and they gave us that.

But that's beyond me. Not and so we made a decision that we wanted to move.

We didn't we didn't know where, but we know we

To Prescott forever hunting. I've been coming here and hunting deer, elk, cow, I mean you name it, we hunt it.

So I've always known about this little gym. I've had some friends that were like begging me to come out here, telling me start a business, you would crush it, blah blah blah. And I'm like, yeah, but I got a union job. I make you know $100 an hour plus my Bennies, my 401k, you know, like pension, like all these things were like hard to say goodbye to because it was a security

Yeah.

blanket. And so

Me and my wife sat down and talked and we were like, hey, we gotta do something. We saw where the housing market was and what was happening, and I told her, like, hey, if we don't sell this little house we're in in this little mountain town now, we're gonna be stuck here for 20 years because the market was so high it had to come back down. And I was afraid that we would never be able to get out of it. So we listed our house. It sold in six days,

and we moved into our fifth wheel.

We had three dogs, two boys, and a thirty-five foot fifth wheel.

We knew we wanted to move, we didn't know where, we just had like, at least we have some money now, we can make some moves. And so we started like figuring out what we wanted to do and we were gonna buy a house out here and then we ended up doing we bought some dirt and put a manufactured home on it and

And so it was off and running and and I knew I wanted to start a company. it it's weird. I think God has like a plan for years I had like thought about recovery.

was going be called recovery electric because I was in recovery and without recovery like I would have none of these things without God and without recovery.

That. So I knew right away, Recovery Electric. It was gonna be a name. I literally had the slogan. it's like a little homage to Alcoholics Anonymous, it's bringing you out of the darkness and into the light. That's Recovery Electric, it's awesome. And so it's kind of cool, you know what I mean? And so we started Recovery Electric. We sat down, me and my wife, we put down on a piece of paper what we needed to make monthly to live the way we had been living.

Still going out to eat dinner, not frugal to say the least bit. Like enjoying life, and this is what this is the amount I need to make per month or per week for the month for our monthly nut to live the way we've been living, like her being able to get Starbucks, me being able to get Starbucks, like those kind of things. So we put those numbers down off and around again. moved out here about six months prior.

Strange enough, like before we left, the our house took was supposed to take a year to build. And so I'm a fitness guy. I used to be 300 pounds, so I like enjoy fitness and I wanted abs. And so I never had abs in my whole life. And so I told a trainer at the gym, like, how do I get abs? And he's like, take off your shirt, let me see. I can get you abs in 12 weeks. I'm like, all right, he's like, but if you're gonna do it, you gotta do a bodybuilding show. And I'm like, what does that look like? And he like kind of laid out, I'm like, let's do it.

And so of course we moved out here, I was like mid-show. Like I think I was in week, we did 16 weeks. no, we did 12 weeks, and I apologize, we did 12 weeks, three months. I was like four weeks in. So when we came out here, I didn't start the business right away because I was just depleted. There was my brain would not function. for anyone that's done bodybuilding.

stairmaster every morning and probably eating 1200 a day and so it was just very much not like being able to study to take the test and all that stuff so got through the bodybuilding show ran with it got my license the licensing process in arizona takes about about a month maybe two just depending by the time you pass the test and you get your LLC you get the bond like

are all steps that you know, Arizona's kinda weird with your LLC, you gotta publish it in the newspaper, which is kinda weird and old school. It's

so the strangest thing to me that you have to like publish that you're coming out with a company.

Yeah.

And I so we had to do like all those steps and so by the time we got it we were like, I think we got like everything settled December and then

Hey I I started this thing, like what's up? And so a lot of like the first business we did was like for for our friends out.

We sat down that year and I remember every year me and my family for New Year's, we sit down and we do three goals, spiritually, mentally, and physically. Those are our three goals

that we want to have. And so one of my goals was to have two guys, two trucks, working for the company.

Crazy, we like exploded and I ended up having three guys and two trucks. That's also at the end. And so fast forward to where we're at now, we have five guys, four trucks.

too too busy. for me business model wise I like to stay seven to ten days out. Nothing's worse than you call me and you're like, hey

Two weeks. You know what I mean? Like I'm gonna find someone else. That's just business to me. That's like obviously I wanna take care of as many people as I can, but when you're two to three weeks out, like some things can't wait. And so we s we we typically spend tend to say five to ten days out. Like I like I

but yeah, then Recovery Electric is just off and running and so we've just been trying to really get

Use is like one of the most important things with me. Like we started a slogan, be a mentor, be an advocate, youth, support the youth, they're the future of this community. My kids are gonna grow up here, they're gonna go to school here, most likely. I mean, I say that, but you know how things go. and so they're gonna be a product of this community. And so like I want them to know the community that they're gonna grow up in and be a part of it.

of the community. I want to be at the events and do these things and be part of it, dude. So that's kind of where we're at.

That's awesome. I mean that's I'm gonna go back and reflect on some things you think are awesome for sure. first one was we went faith, sobriety, then then family, right? Even in my our family core values and we even talk about it in our brotherhood.

faith fitness family and the reason like people always like why is this one second and it's because I've got to take it's like the put the the the the f the mask on first on the plane, right? Yeah. Like for us and family for a lot of entrepreneurs, it your fitness, your health, is the mover that if if I'm really, really healthy

I can take care of my family, I can take care of my business, but if it's not done first, before I can do this, that's why when you that's

like I it because it really fits in our core values too, the conceptual side that like your sobriety feeds like by you being sober, you can do all the things you need to do. But if I'm not sober, I can't do exactly

Josh Lederer (11:54)
Not

a week. Nothing's possible without my spray. I am no fool to that. Like I was a junkie decor heroin addict. Heroin brought me my knees. And so I have no no fooling about that. Like I never drink alcohol for the taste. I drink alcohol for the effect produced. That's just who I was. That's what I liked. I'm like I said, I grew up in a great family. Just I like what alcohol does to me, dude.

made me comfortable in my own skin so to say. it took all the fears and anxieties that you might have as a youngster of like what people think about you. As an adult, I've learned like none of that shit matters, but as a kid, man, you know what I mean? Like you don't, you want everyone to like you. You want to be I I try to tell everyone like the my whole life, even today, the one thing I search for is acceptance. Acceptance is key, right? And so everyone loves the out of the way.

Hey, good like, yeah. You know what I mean? It makes you feel good. That out of boy, that feeling of acceptance. And so I searched for that my whole life by using drugs and alcohol. Drugs and alcohol made me feel accepted around everyone. And so I'm like, I try to do my best and like my kids nowadays, like when they do a good job, even if they don't like do the greatest job, like doing good job.

Everyone loves getting a treat. Every dog loves wagging its tail. That's like the easiest thing to me to see is like I just want to wag my tail. I just want to be happy. I want to get that treat. I want to feel accepted. And so i I I try to stress that. I I I try to be grateful for everything that I do. That like I get to share my message on this podcast. Like everything, you know, like it's weird because God works for me in my life when I don't know how to work for myself. yesterday we were like

I was just having a day, dude. We went camping and came back and it was like company chaos. Guys stuck in the mud, you know what I mean? And by a phone call that like someone I knew passed away. And it was like so humbling, dude, because I was like just in my head about like this guy is a dumbass, and I could tell him because I told him that, like, why would he drive through the mud puddle and stuck and now I gotta drive an hour to pull this guy? And it's like these little minuscule problems.

someone I know lost their life. And it's crazy because like I get emotional talking about

it. I have like a a real belief in God does for me what I can't do for myself. So it's like here I am like in my head about bullshit. Like none of that really matters dude like none of it. I just went camping with my family and I want to cry and piss and moan.

And shit on life because someone got stuck in the mud. You know what I mean? Like it inconvenienced me. And now I don't have like now that guy's dad. Like he's never gonna get to see his kids. His kids aren't gonna grow up without dad. And like pictures about the

small stuff, you know? And so it's cool, dude. It's it's super cool because he's done it. Like I can remember I had to put down a dog one time. And I was like

I think I was like maybe a year or two years sober, dude. My dad was out of town and the dog got bit by a rattlesnake and I had to like be the man and like make the decision. And this is like a childhood dog. I'm like, I tell my dad, like, you mother effort, why aren't you here? You know what I mean? Like this is your job. Like I'm not supposed to be making these decisions. He's like, dude, you gotta make the phone call. Like you have to make that call. I am not there. I can't you either tell him to put her down or or or try to let her know.

So I had to make the ultimate sacrifice and I had to put him down and and so I'm like, I'm gonna go buried like this favorite spot she used to run.

in my head, same normal stuff, like in my head about burying my childhood dog and I talked to him at the counter and he's like, You alright man? Like you obviously see him crying, I'm like, Yeah.

She has cancer. And I'm like, holy fuck, you know, like dude. Like here you are again in my life, like crying about these like little things. Like it's a dog, and I get it.

Tell people dog's the only family member you can choose.

And so that they are part of my life, but like here's God saying, like, hey girl.

So like it's cool that he does that for me. Like it's super cool that he like grounds me up. Because I need it. Like I hit him ahead as a business owner and I'm like, like well how am I putting out this fire, this fire, this fire, blah blah blah blah. And then it's like, hey bro, remember like stop and spuddy.

Like it could be worse. So it's like, it's it's super cool. I'm I'm like the relationship I have with God, some people might say it's strange, but like

whole I tell me he's a mother effort sometimes because like I'm a firm believer like if I'm thinking it he knows it so what's it

just having an open conversation with him be like bro what's your problem right now you know what I mean because like if he's all knowing and all powerful then he already knows that I'm thinking he's a dick you know so like I have a cool relationship with him like that and then he grounds me out and so like faith is is super important to me like having having trust and knowing

control the time.

thing to do is like letting the lane letting the reins go and knowing that like nothing happens in God's world by mistake. That like it's gonna be alright and he's gonna take care of me. And to try not to control everything. And I learned a lot of that through you know getting sober is like I love control. I think I know what's best for everyone.

I d I don't you know what I mean? But those are like a lot of the things that I learned in in Sprite was like like a

cheesy slogans that people have in their bathrooms like they're real and they're cool.

I mean, love what you're talking about there. One thing I've had to do personally is I've had to change the inputs I'm getting so that my mindset stays more godly. What I mean by that is instead of listening to like hardcore music is more gonna be gospel music and stuff when I'm listening to music because I need the input of God more consistently. Yeah. Because just like you, I think all entrepreneurs get in this w woe is me moment, even though

We have broad

shoulders, we can carry a lot, but man, at the same time, we carry a lot. And so it's like, man, why do I have to go through this? We choose to go through it for one. But so my input to that and then my pot, I listen forever. I listen to vod business podcasts all the time or business books all the time, just hammering us through. And then probably about eight months ago, I was listening to a podcast, and the guy said, like, if you want to become a godly

are filled with God more often. And so now now my podcast are my favorite pastors listening to them talk about that kind of stuff. So now it's like

Instead of like the idea of I was just feeding things from the world that I enjoyed from yeah, I'm a Denver Broncos fan, so Broncos podcasts and business podcasts, having those to me now I'm being fed by pasture podcasts. And what it does for me in the moment is it helps me stay more present with God. You know, like man, like if I don't have those constant inputs, I have a tendency to just like take take life for advantage. We just have so many good things. Prescott's a cool area, we don't deal with crazy like Chicago and places that have been

have those weird stuff. We don't even I don't even think about that stuff anymore. So we don't watch the news in the life, don't we don't have kids yet, but but we so we have a pretty easy life. We're not having kid chaos. We have just a dog that likes attention. Beautiful

home, we bought a home in Chino Valley, beautiful home in Chico. So all these things like life is pretty good, but when life is pretty good, you have a tendency still to complain about the little things. So I love that you went that direction because I do think for entrepreneurs in generals we especially if you're somebody that's strong in your faith, you need to make sure that you're getting more input from God.

you need to have that input more consistently throughout your time so that when God stays on your mind to continue to remind you, like the mission achieving in life is a mission led by

God. So I love that you have your strong your faith, that you you're leading forward with it. I guess kind of hit home to me that like I have been hard to change my perspective on the everyday like bishop and money.

and it's like stuff comes up you know what I mean like life just happens and there's not much you can do about it and again like I'm grateful for my sobriety because it was like it made me learn to just like keep moving forward like we spill I spill this water right now are me and you're gonna talk about who cleans it up are we gonna be like you spill water on the floor like

Just clean it up, dude. Like it's done. You know what I mean? Like just clean it up. Let's just move on, like continue with the podcast. You know, and so like I try to take life like that. Like, stuff's gonna happen, business is gonna happen. We just had an RLC meeting where a company owes us a lot of money. A lot of money. You know what I mean? And they're not gonna pay us, and I'm probably never gonna see that money again. No.

And so it's crazy because I have this like new outlook on life because of sobriety. And it's like if you would have told me 17 years ago when I was getting loaded that you're gonna be doing what I do, I would tell you there's no fucking way. I'd tell you your line. I would tell you you're lying. I'd be like, there's no way that's not in my cards. I'm a joke. Right? But then if you told me, hey, someone's gonna owe you over 40 grand and you're still gonna be okay.

be like no way and then the the the third one which is like the gangster in me is like someone's gonna owe you 40 grand and you don't have them tied up in a basement somewhere right and so it's like dude to to like sit back and look at that right to like take it all in and like really look at those three things for me is like crazy like someone owes me a ton of money that's a ton of money and like

We're still going to Williams camping. You know what I mean? We're still like going to dinner. It's not like bank account is alright. You know what I mean? We're not like, we're alright. And the fact that they're not tied up somewhere, and I'm like probably doing federal crime time now. And that all that happened, if you would have told me that when I was 17 years ago when I was still getting loaded, I'd be like.

Trev Warnke (21:15)
That that's one thing I'd love to like listeners that are listening to this that aren't entrepreneurs. I think that what you just said, there is a an entrepreneur mindset that most people don't understand. If you're a normal employee, if you don't get paid for the week, you're not working, right? You just kind of like, hey, I'm not I'm done, I'm quitting, or whatever. As entrepreneurs, we we face obstacles most people don't realize the amount of money that we've had to sink back into our business to continue to get to grow, the amount of money that we've had to eat for things that went wrong that.

fault. it's we but we I think it's a it's an awesome t part of being an entrepreneur is your mindset just like I'll figure it out. I will bet on myself every single

Josh Lederer (21:49)
But I've been that guy. Like I've always wanted the ball with three seconds left to take the final shot. That's me. Like I love crunch time. I have always been that person. Like there's a reason I was a yes sir and I came in on Saturdays and hammered stuff out for the union. It's because like I like as a third-year apprentice dude, I we were building a Netflix building. I had three floors. And they were introducing journeyman guys and they're like, hey, this is your apprentice foreman. Listen to him. He's running these three floors.

Like that that was me. I was a third year apprentice running 14 guys, like having two-week look ahead. So like I was like essentially I I believe built for this. and going back to like what you think about as an entrepreneur, like I we I talked earlier about like that list and at the time it was like I need to make two grand a week.

Take home for us to live the way we have been living. We've been paying the bills at X, Y, and Z. Now it's like, dude, I got five guys, I gotta come up with seven grand a week just for payroll. That's just for payroll. That's not that's a pay these guys on time. That's not just for the gas that they're driving in the work trucks, the insurance, like that's not everything else. That's just to make sure that they get a payment this week, and it's like

To sit back and think about these things is truly humbling. And like the amount of gratefulness I get, like when I sit back and I like realize, like, man,

It's cool to like sit back and watch and w and watch things grow and continue to grow. You know you know, so I love it. I love

Shot, I want to have the pressure on me. My phone's ranging seven times since we've been in here and I'm like itching to look at it, make sure I'm not like bleeding money on the table. That's what I hate, you know what I mean? It that's like own your business. And and some people will get this, and if you're an entrepreneur and you're thinking about it, but like not do you just miss a job, you miss four potential jobs. Because if you make that one person happy, the word of mouth is what's gonna get you further.

So it's not just missing one job. You have the potential of missing five jobs. That job plus four more. And it's like, that's crazy to think about, right? Because like everything you do is word of mouth. Like especially we talked about it a little bit off camera, but like Prescott Quad City areas is a very small, tight-knit community. Word of mouth goes a long way. If people feel like they can trust you, that's it. Where I came from in Los Angeles, dude, it was like, who's the first Google?

You know what I mean? Like, need an electrician. If you came up on Google, that's usually, you just started on that list. You know what I mean? And then it's like, I don't know who's coming to my house. And then like I out here, I I like try to base it on like, you know, we're gonna show up, we're gonna, we're gonna be on time, if not ten minutes early. Like I pride ourselves on that. If we're not, I just want communication from from me, from my guys, whatever that looks like. Stuff is gonna happen. A guy is gonna get stuck in the mud.

You know what I mean? And so like we just need to call the customer and say, Hey, like I know we gave you a a window. This is going on. And most people are like, Cool, at least you called. You didn't know we're

I think in two years of business I missed one thing and it just because I blanked on it, I didn't put on the schedule, and I missed one client in two years of business, over two years of business, which is like I pride myself in doing what I say and being there. Like if I tell you something, it's gonna happen. It's gonna happen. You know what I mean? And if it's not gonna happen, I'm gonna know that it's not gonna happen, and there's gonna be a good excuse. It's gonna be because wanted to play golf. Like it's not. Like that, like the fun will happen, but the priorities need to happen.

And so it's it's just it's just those things that like we try to do like as a company. I try to put myself in the consumer shoes. Okay. And so I used to hate when I would call like the cable company and be back, well we can give you two windows, eight to twelve or twelve to four. It's like cool, I just lost half my day hoping that you come in a four-hour window. Yeah.

Like right. And so here with this company I do two hour windows. I'm like, hey, the like we we give two hour windows, if not one hour windows, most of the time. We can like a one hour window because I could plan and coordinate like to get someone there so that they're not wasting a day. Like and usually like we're pretty cool, man. Like if you're like, hey dude, I got a lunch hour, I get it, like everyone is in this same we're all in the same grind together.

Like we were all grinding to put food on our plates and have fun with our families. And so like I don't want you to have to take a half day off of work or you burn your PDO. Like, you know what I mean? To like wait for me at your house to do your lecture. Like, if you got an hour window, we'll like schedule that hour window and I'll come do an estimate of that hour so that you can not miss work. And I think like things like that are important. Like

I think somewhere along the lines, and I I give a lot of this credit to like my old man. Like my old man was like that guy, dude. He did what he said and just was that guy. He showed up for people, he showed up for family, he showed up for friends. If you were a friend of his, he never charged you for anything. Like if you were a buddy and you were in his tribe, like and he knew how to fix your fence, he would go over there and be like mixing burgers and like I'll fix your fence. Like that was just my dad. Like I watched my dad do it.

So like a lot of this stuff is like is generational, right? And so like I want to instill those same things in my kids. So like I try to like I think we lost sight of others. Of like truly caring of like what other people are going through. Life is fucking rough.

It's rough, like it's tough, it's hard, there's no blueprint the way you raise your family. I can't raise my family that way. Like there's no there's no guide. There's no guide to this thing called life. Like you think you have it figured out and then something happens. And so I just try to like truly think about others and like what others are going through and be cognant of it. Like I wanna I don't wanna

The reason I used drugs and and drank and did all those things I did was because I was extremely selfish. I didn't care about no one except myself. No one.

and I don't want to live that way no more. So my whole thought process in life is to do my best to be not to be selfless and to think about what others are going through really.

Truly put put a different hat on. You know what I mean? And like think of like, all right, you know what I mean? Like stuff happens, man. And so I just I wish the world would start to carry it. I think we would get further if we like try to believe in other people's shoes for an hour. You know what I mean? And just a a day of like everyone has chaos, man. Like everyone has chaos and we're all trying to do the same thing at the end of the day is like raise a decent family.

put food on the table. And so those are like the little things that I like take into business that I hope my kids are watching. Like that, like everything I do is to be an example. Like someone's watching. You know what I mean? Like someone's watching what you're doing doing and like we should be an example, man. Like everyone should be an example and like I think it would like maybe turn some of this craziness around.

Maybe turn some of this crazy around if like we really started to like genuinely care and smile at people. Like there's a reason at the safe way that the lady has a name tag with a name. You know what I mean? It's okay to like thank you, Nancy, for ringing me up. Like it's it like be sociable, hold the door for people, smile at people, like it's okay. You know what I mean? Like everyone's so like knows the grindstone. I gotta make money, I gotta do this. Like just remember like stop and just take it all in every once in a while. Like

I've been pretty good at doing those things of like, dude, I get like emotional just like driving by myself. Like thinking of like where I came from, from like essentially the gates of hell, like insanity of drug addiction, heroin addict every day, waking up, putting a needle on my arm just to survive. To like last month, me and my oldest son went to Milwaukee for a RAF next gen wrestling tournament.

And he kicked so much ass that he got to be on Fox Nation. You know what I mean? For like in the finals. You know what I mean? And like Maverick Liver and he's like running out. You know what I mean? It's like I'll cry it. Like I'll just re-track him down the road, like thinking about like where I was at to where I am now. And like I I like people need to realize like slow down, man. Like we only get one one shot at this thing, so we're told, right? Like

If you believe in the faith that I believe in, like this is my one chance to like live this thing to the fullest. And that's why that's what Recovery Electric is about, man. Like I started to be present with my kids and be there with my family.

If they have a football game like we're going to a football game, if we had or if we're wrestling and we're we gotta take a couple days off to go to Milwaukee to be part of a crazy next gen tournament and be on TV, like we're going. You know what I mean? And I d I didn't wanna be s struck to those to those constraints of like a nine to five.

I mean you said so much good stuff there. One thing I want to point for entrepreneurs in practice exactly is so one thing I learned working with doing business coaching for a lot of entrepreneurs around here.

One is nobody around here knows how to market. And the reason is because they haven't had to really do marketing, like you and me had to do in like LA and Chicago. You have to be marketing your ass off. Here, after doing a lot of podcasts talking to people, there's really three advantages in this area that are simple to do the win business.

What we do bring is life experiences from those areas and we actually see, hey, there are things that you guys miss the vote on because you're used to your community. We're used to these communities. You want to bring the best of both.

Well like one of the biggest things when I first came out here are like wholesale houses in LA, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Like they're open. Out here, everything is like slowed down. Seven, eight o'clock, you know what I mean? These wholesale houses are opening, closing at four, not open on the weekends. Like to me, when I first moved out here, I thought it was like insanity that like an electrical wholesale house is not open on Saturday and Sunday.

Because I'm used like I'm used to like at the disposal. You know what I mean? And like there's when we first came out, there was two wholesale houses. I was like, what? You know what I mean? Like, you're talking about in a five mile square radius in in where I came from, there might be five. You know what I mean? Like around one around every corner. Like, and the competition was like it took a bit of that of the

curve of like of stocking a lot of stuff if we're doing weekend work because we are a 24-hour based service.

you're calling me at two AM to come replace your beeping f you know, sm your smoke detector, like that cost a different price than calling me from eight to four. You know what I mean? Like and so then they're like, nah nah, we'll do an eight to four, you know, which is fine, like it it's it's not a big deal, but these are all things like, you know, if someone did call me

And it's happening at 2 a.m. to change a smoke alarm. Like, I have to have it. Because it's not like anything's open at 2 a.m. And so like a lot of learning curves through business of like figuring that out, figure figuring out prices. it it still very much is very a cutthroat. You know what I mean? Like everyone's competitive, which is good. It it helps the consumer. You know what I mean? we we've kind of found a pretty good

Competitive price, but also providing a service. Which I think that's like Arizona is like the wild, wild west, dude. You don't have to have like a contractor's license if you're doing anything less than a thousand dollars worth of work. Anyone like today, you can go change someone's outlet in their house and you're fine. Like and you could charge them 200 bucks and they could cut you a check and there's no like legality from it. Which is that's like the wild west to me. You know what I mean?

And so a lot of people are like might do a ten thousand dollar job but get ten one thousand dollar checks. There's like a workaround. And so like it's crazy to me that like one people aren't having people that are licensed, bond, and insured, right? Those are like three things that like we try to hark about licensed, bond, and insured. we try we we do our best to provide the training to these guys before I just like

them go out in the real world, you know what I mean? It's not like, hey, I got one year of electrical experience. Cool, here's a truck. Like go fix this person's house. No, no, no, no. Like I hired experienced guys

that know what they're doing that I'm confident that I would leave them to work on my own home. That's like the confidence that I have like that I would allow them to work on my own house as an electrical contractor. So that's like important to me that we're like licensed bonded insured we carry all the stuff we need to carry and like

cool and like for the meeting for me is I spent five years in an apprenticeship where literally two days a week I went to school for three hours two days a week so six hours a week learning electrical from a book like on this wall you know what mean like I understand AC theory DC theory like I can open a transformer a lot of these fly by night guys they don't under they could

chat GBT and now and so like it's important for me to like for people to know who they're hiring. And

I don't want to just send people out in the field that like I really wouldn't trust it on my own at home. That's like the most important.

If I trust them to work on my own house. Because then I know that it's not gonna be messed up. And so, like another thing for the entrepreneurs, like obviously, social media is like a giant thing, you know what I mean? If you're not up to date on your socials and and providing like a social media content and allowing in, you know, it's uncomfortable, but getting in front of the camera and allowing people to see who you really are, and then when they show up, you're like, dang, this is the same guy that I

nine months, you know. some of the things we did that like I didn't I I I saw in some of the bigger companies, but not a lot of the companies is like we wrap all of our vehicles. I wrap everything in Recovery Electric. My personal, my everything.

One, it helps me not drive like an asshole. I can't be drawing you the middle finger, you know what I mean? In a in a in my w in my personal truck if it's rapid recovery electric, you know, 'cause like you said, I might see them at the wall later. but two, it's branding, man. Like branding, branding.

say enough to all you guys that are like inspiring to be entrepreneurs like branding is key man like get your brand out there it's not about making the money right away but it's about making the money in the long term I've had people call me they're like dude I see your trucks everywhere

You know what I mean? Like we don't even have that many. We don't even have that many trucks at the time. You know what I mean? And like I've had people call me like, hey, can you come wire at my house? I just saw you drive by in a in your truck. Like I got your number off the side of a truck. I'm like, dude, it's work. You know what I mean? Like it's working. And so like bragging is key.

That's that's where it's

hard is because like I have so many friends and like the the most impressive ones to me are like the 21-year-olds. You know, I have my buddy Frank, he owns a 1881 land development, they do land taking and fencing, Dean fencing company, Joel, like he does fencing, ghost tires, Devin, like he wants a whole tire show. Like, these kids are 21 years old, came from this town, talk about like

The youth is the future of this community, right? They are like reintroducing themselves into the community and bringing money back into the community. And like, so like that's like where this Feature Friday thing kinda started. Was like, dude, there's so many like little like found fathers. You know what I mean? Like there are so many things that like people might not know about that like I want to bring light to, like, to these businesses. You know what I mean? And and so,

It's been super cool. Like people think you have to pay for them. You don't. Like that's all covered by me with my social media guy. We just come out, we feature your company. it runs Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Well actually it's a preview on Thursdays on our social. I think we got like between Facebook and Instagram we are at like 50,000 followers, so it gets like like spent on that. Like most of our Facebook following is from the Quad City area, so like it's cool because

we run into people in town and they're like dude I I I wake up every Friday morning to see who you're gonna feature and it's like dang dude that's it's kinda cool you know and so the feature Fridays like again no cost like we just come out my social media team comes out we shoot the content they cut it down to the b roll and everything and it's all free of charge just because like I I want people to know like what's available in this community. There is so much available. for me

It's basic economics. If we're supporting people in this town and we're not taking our money out of town, the sales tax goes back into the town and we're allowed to have cooler things. Then they then the town can put more money or the city can put more money back into our communities. And so that's like super important to me. Is like I wanna be able to spend my money where I make my money, because I know it's gonna go back.

And so I like highlighting these businesses. Like we don't need to go to the valley for everything. Like there are businesses here that do it. There are everything you need is here. You just have to be willing to find it. You know, and so

the reciprocity. I mean like you're highlighting these people which automatically going other people get eyes in your business. Yeah. You're getting a return on investment in the sense like, hey, now more people, because you're spotlighting other businesses, other people like, I love that they're even it's not really about your electrical that you guys really, but they're starting to see the value of this is a guy

Putting value back into our community. So when they go for electricity or going for something, they're like, hey, this guy does cool stuff. So I do think entrepreneurs around I don't know. I've been very blessed since I've been here. We've been really pushing like a community, our community-based business over the last year. We've been here for four years, but my community-based business called the Brotherhood, it's been like a year. And I've run into so many cool entrepreneurs that are like just giving back kind of people, but not as a small percent of people. There are a lot of people in the community.

that like are still like stuck

to the idea that like there's not enough a scarcity mindset, right? There's not enough business to go around. And the issue is is like for the most part, there's a lot of business in this area for people.

And what businesses start to like be beneficial to each other in a small community like this. So you grew up in a small town. I grew up in a town of 600. And so, like, yeah, so like I grew up in a small town, we went to school in a town that was like 4,000. Even in that type community, like it they there's like you would work together with other businesses because that's the only way you could survive. Yeah, yeah. And so I love that idea that they're doing, I the average business owner here needs to think more about like fact that doing business with other businesses is actually a great way to grow your own business.

100%. I it just like I said, to be back, one thing that like is super important to me right now is there's a bond that's gonna come out for Humboldt Unified School District. So I don't know like you came from a b a bigger town like LA, like schools automatically get money by how many kids come to school. Arizona's not a state like that. They it's all five. So you know about all this stuff. So like it's all like you have to apply for these funds.

And so there's a big one that we all

some money to come back into to Humboldt Unified so that they can upgrade the academics program and they can upgrade the roofs and ACs and all these things that you know that they don't get any money for that. Like it's all paid through you know ascension registration which public school is damn near free nowadays. You know what I mean? And so like

And even now they recently released that when wouldn't Trump let the federal go to the state, now if you're homeschooling that used to be money that goes to the state, now that money doesn't, it goes to wherever you want to spend it. So these public schools are being affected pretty negatively by that, which is fine because I do think the education system needs to be uprooted a little bit. However,

the average public school around here is facing a lot of financial needle.

Yeah, well, because

like I'll be honest, me and my wife are not capable of doing homeschool yet. It's just not in our blood. I'm not, I cannot teach my kids school. I barely could do it myself when I was in school. Probably where I head the path that I head. And so like not everyone's meant to homeschool. You what I mean? And so homeschool is a great opportunity, the AS program is a great opportunity for people, but

Some people are not capable of doing those things and some people like have a nine to five and have to go to work and school is the option for them to work. That's how I grew up. Both my parents went to work, see you later at school, be back at three o'clock, or then I did after school program and everything else until five, football, like whatever it was, and then they pick me up at the end of the day because like they were trying to provide.

And so like homeschooling is not an option for everyone, unfortunately. and it's not made for everyone. So like the public school systems, they need like people people talking about it, you know. People talking about it I think it it's all important. like like I we talked earlier, there's no like blueprint on how to raise your family, how to live

just have to do like what's what you think best for your family at that time and it could change I could say this now and in two years I'm like we're going home fool you know what I mean it's just the way the way the world works you know and so it like people people in the community we gotta be more aware of like what's happening

Businesses, what are the bonds? What exactly is this going to? Like, where are these funds? I mean, everyone had a damn cow about the Prestic Valley sign that went up on Glassburg, and everyone's I can't believe we wasted money on that sign, blah blah blah. And it's like little did they know that was a bond, a grant from the state of Arizona that said they either had to buy art or do a sign. And so they chose a sign that was not paid for by any of our money.

But every but no one knows that. You know what I mean? Because no one's involved. Like everyone's an armchair quarterback, right? Like the Facebook hero, you know? And so like it it like just be involved. Like be involved. Like we should all be involved, especially if you're young and you have kids and they're growing up and they're gonna they plan on growing up in this town. Like we we gotta get involved in the town. We gotta like start being the the mentors, the you know what I mean? Like get out there and coach your kids in football, man.

Coach him in wrestling or whatever you whatever you decide to do, like get him out there, get him active, like be that mentor. Remember that someone's always watching. You know what I mean? Like.

That my kids are gonna think I'm Superman from five or whatever until if I'm lucky, 14, 15. You know what I mean? And then they're gonna be getting a girlfriend and a license, and dad is gonna be like to the side. You and which is fine. That's what I did, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. and so like I wanna be and I wanna suck all this up right now.

To suck all this up and like being an entrepreneur has like allowed me to do those things, but also like if you're not like go, like if even if you're not

Your kids are only kids once. Like we only had a little bit of time to spend with them and be with them and like imprint on them and remember like everything I do. I have to remember like.

cuss like a sailor at home and they catch on to it and like they let it slip and I'm like that's my fault. You know what I mean? Like it's no one else's fault. Like who taught them that? Like they're they suck everything in, you know, and so it's important to to be there and and and mentor like the youth man.

town council and they're gonna own a business in town and they're they can they when I'm old they could be coming and doing my AC they can be looking my next house like that's just the way it is right like we are raising these these kids to to grow up in this town and so like it's cool to like be part of it.

Just an autobiography of like, how the hell did you get here? Right? that's dreamling. Get I dream big. If not, just create a sense of community with company. I want people to be able to rely and trust upon us to be able to call us if they have a problem. I want them to call us if they want a reference for a plumber.

that I can I I just want a sense of trust in my community that they know what they're getting when they

who they're calling and what they are. So that's like the ultimate legacy for me. just to be able to provide a sense of community for my kids to grow up and and and build some cool things and be that dad that like my dad did it to me and I wanna be able to do it to my kids, like drive by something like you see that building? Your dad built that building. Like I wanna be that old man. You know what I mean? And so that that's like really like like all all I could ask for. That's like legacy for me. I I

Talk about all the time. when I got sober, they said your wildest dreams could come true. They told me if you if you fully take on this and become sobriety and and sobriety is not just not drinking or using drugs, sobriety is all-encompassing, not being selfish, not you know living a different way of life, being productive. They said if you were to do these things, your wildest dreams could become possible. And when I got sober, in my 40s now, I got sober when I was 23, my dreams were wild.

Thought I needed like a private jet. I never wanted to wear the same t-shirt twice. You know what I mean? Like I mean like a rock star. You know? what I came to find out what my dream really is.

Two beautiful boys, they're healthy.

Four dogs. We got three and a half acres, a house, a little white picket fence, and we can do mostly what we want.

little things and I didn't know that that was what my dream was. And so I can honestly say that like I'm living my dream. I'm living my dream. And

I like I I joke but I don't joke but like when I get to the pearly gates if I continue to live the life I've been living now I shouldn't should end up there. But like if I got there and someone told me I remember this time frame from 2024 to 20 to 2035 or whatever, that was heaven. I'd be like, I fucking knew. That's really how I feel right now. You know what I mean? That's like honestly how I feel in my heart of hearts that like I am living in

I just love like I truly love my life. I'm like grateful for it. My boys are boys, they're a pain in the ass sometimes, and I want to cry tears of joy from them and I've cry tears of anger from them. But like I love it. Like I love it. I love my wife. I couldn't be happier the relationship we have. And so like I'm living my dream. And so like legacy would just be hopes that my boys got to live that same dream. Whatever that may be.

That can make their dreams come true, man.

Yeah, I don't know. You know what I mean? That that's like like legacy for me is is family, you know what I mean, and and friends and like try to help everyone get to their goals and their life.

Make stuff happen for people, man. Like I just wanted to have the feeling I could have. Like if I if if I could give this feeling to everyone, like I would. Cause it's like super cool.

But I also want them to be able to be like

you I can eat a horse to water but I can't make it drink but like I can sure as hell leads you're in the right direction also if you guys have a little drinking time with being sober and you want to come we do once a month at the juvenile hall we speak to the youth there if anyone ever wants to come with me entrepreneurs stuff like that you don't have to be sober

I'm not just gonna take anyone I need to do to do a little bit of a background check, but like it's super cool to bring to bring people into those programs and tell them like, hey, you don't have to do that, you don't have to pull your head out of your ass at 23 to get sober and then finally start a business at 35. You know what I mean? Like you can start now as soon as you get out of here and move towards the right path and like have all your dreams come true at a young age. You don't have to wait like we do.
